What anxiety actually is

Anxiety is your body's threat detection system doing its job in situations where it is no longer helpful. The same response that kept our ancestors alive when they heard something in the bushes is now firing when you open your emails, walk into a room full of people, or lie awake at 3am thinking about something you said six years ago.

It is not a weakness or a character flaw. It is a system running too hot. And the good news is that it responds well to the right support.

What it can feel like

It shows up differently for everyone. For some people it is a constant background hum of worry that never quite switches off. For others it is sudden and physical, a racing heart, tight chest, the feeling that something terrible is about to happen even when you know logically that it is not.

You might find yourself avoiding things you used to manage fine. Cancelling plans, putting off phone calls, taking the long way round to dodge a situation that makes you uncomfortable. You might not sleep well, or you might sleep but wake up exhausted because your brain never really stopped.

Some people do not even recognise it as anxiety at first. They just know they feel permanently on edge, or tired in a way that rest does not fix, or irritable for no obvious reason.

How counselling helps

Counselling gives you a space to understand what is driving your anxiety rather than just managing the symptoms. That might mean looking at thought patterns that keep the cycle going, exploring where the anxiety started, or simply having somewhere to say out loud what you have been carrying in your head.

There is no single approach that works for everyone, which is why our counsellors work integratively, drawing on different methods depending on what fits you. Some people respond well to practical strategies for managing anxious thoughts. Others need to go deeper into what is underneath. Most people benefit from a combination of both.

You do not need to know what kind of help you need before you get in touch. That is something you and your counsellor work out together.
